Moreno Valley- When five-year-old “Emily” and her parents were involved in a traffic accident on a California freeway the incident was very traumatic and emotional.  First responders were able to calm “Emily” by giving her a teddy bear and talking with her as paramedics provided care for her parents.  This situation, and many others like it, brought Riverside County’s Department of Public Social Services together with Smile Generation dentists and AiR1 Radio for the 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Drive.

First Responders like police, fire, EMS and social workers often use teddy bears as a way to connect and comfort children.  “So, when children go through or witness tragedy they can hold a small comforting teddy bear while their little minds try to make sense of the situation,” said Susan D. Mahoney, DPSS Children’s Services Regional Manager.

Children’s Services Division was among several First Responders across the region to receive the new teddy bears.  Smile Generation dentists and patients worked with 90.1(FM) AiR1 in Perris, CA to collect the bears during the month of May. “It was an incredible success this year as over 1000 bears were donated,” said Stacey Syrocki, Smile Generation.
